The Bear’s Head: A New Era for a Beloved Penarth Pub

New Ventures

We are delighted to announce the grand opening of our eighth venue, The Bear’s Head, today!

The Journey to Preservation

Earlier this year, when J D Wetherspoon announced the closure of The Bear’s Head, the Penarth community rallied to save their beloved pub. Local resident Nick Simmons led the charge with a petition addressed to the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA). The opening paragraph passionately conveyed the sentiments of the community:

“The Bear’s Head is more than just a pub to us. It has served the community of Penarth for many years and continues to be a much-loved establishment with affordable drinks, good quality food, and friendly locals. It is one of the beating hearts of Penarth and it would be tragic to see it go when it has been a staple for so many years here.”

This outpouring of support highlighted the pub’s significance as a community pillar. Motivated by this, Croeso Pubs Ltd embarked on a mission to save The Bear’s Head, culminating in the acquisition of the pub in May.

A Community Triumph

Craig Davies, Director of Croeso Pubs Ltd, expressed his determination to preserve the pub:

“The fact that the community launched a petition when the closure of Bear’s Head was announced demonstrates that this is a place that matters to locals, and this only galvanises our resolve to invest in this ‘must visit’ pub in Penarth.”

Following Wetherspoon’s last day on June 16th, we set to work rejuvenating the venue. We’ve updated its appearance while retaining its beloved features, preparing for a grand reopening at 8 AM today. This marks a new era for The Bear’s Head under our management.

A Commitment to Quality and Affordability

Our primary focus has been to maintain affordable prices for food and drinks. We’ve worked tirelessly with suppliers to ensure The Bear’s Head remains an everyday pub for all, without compromising on quality. We proudly serve Welsh produce, sourced from Rib and Oyster in Tenby.

We’re also excited to introduce various daily deals:

  • Steak House Tuesday
  • Curry House Thursday
  • Fish Friday

These deals make pub classics accessible without straining your budget.

Special Offerings

We know how important a good cup of coffee is to start your day, so we’re offering bottomless coffee refills for just £1.99. Our exclusive Croeso Pub Collection coffee is crafted by Fab Four Coffee, owned by ex-Welsh rugby players Lee Byrne, James Hook, and Shane Williams.

For ale enthusiasts, we present The Bear’s Head Ale, brewed by Glamorgan Brewing Company, available at just £2.49 per pint.

We are thrilled to announce the grand reopening of The Discovery Pub in Cardiff’s Lakeside area, now under the new ownership of Croeso Pubs. Following our acquisition of this renowned establishment, The Discovery has undergone a major refurbishment, breathing new life into the venue.

The Discovery was previously operated by Knife and Fork Food, which listed its six venues for sale last year. We are excited to add this beloved local pub to our growing portfolio.

At Croeso Pubs, we pride ourselves on revitalizing well-loved venues. Our Cardiff-based hospitality group already includes six popular spots: Philharmonic, Brewhouse, Retro, Blue Bell, Daffodil, and the Dock in Cardiff Bay. Our successful track record includes the 2017 reopening of the Philharmonic after a full refurbishment and the transformation of 33 Windsor Place into our proudly Welsh gastropub Daffodil in December 2022.

In January of last year, we also welcomed the Dock in Cardiff Bay to our family, and recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of our acclaimed live music venue Brewhouse.

Our directors are enthusiastic about the potential of The Discovery. Simon Little commented, “We are enjoying huge success at our establishments in central Cardiff and Cardiff Bay. The Discovery has huge potential to be a bustling community pub and it’s fantastic to add it to the Croeso pubs family.”

Craig Davies added, “When we heard the lease was up for sale in June, we didn’t hesitate. It’s always been a popular gastro pub for the locals, and we look forward to welcoming visitors to sample some of the best locally-sourced food and drink.”

We invite you to come and experience the newly renovated Discovery Pub, where we are committed to offering an exceptional pub experience with a focus on community and quality.
